Make Your Mock Scrapes Now - Give the Deer Time to Make Them Their Own Before the Rut.

It's not too late to build your HODAG setups and mock scrapes — but every day you wait is a day the deer aren't taking your scent hub over as their own. Here's why early beats late, and what happens on the ground the sooner you make your setups.

A "mock scrape" is only a mock scrape until the deer take it over.

Once that happens, it's not a mock anything. It's just a scrape — a real one, worked by real deer, with real scent left behind by every buck, doe, and fawn in the area. Or as we prefer to call it: a deer scent hub.

That's the whole game. You build the framework. The deer make it real.

And the sooner you build the framework, the sooner they make it real, the more it becomes engrained into their routine — which is exactly why the calendar matters right now.

It's not too late. But every day you wait is a day the deer haven't started taking that spot over. With the shift that's happening in the woods right this minute, the difference between setting up today and setting up in two weeks is bigger than most hunters realize.

Why Early Beats Late

Four reasons, and every one of them is happening in real time as you read this.

1. Deer need time to take it over as a scent hub.

You can drop a Licking Stick in the ground this afternoon. That doesn't make it a scent hub yet.

Your setup needs time for deer to begin using it — to sniff it, to start rubbing on it, licking it, and dropping their own scent on it. Every visit is a deposit. Every deposit reinforces to the next deer that this is a spot to check.

That process doesn't take months, but it doesn't happen the moment you walk away either. The clock starts when the stick goes in the ground, the rope is hung and scented, or the perfect branch is placed. Not when you decide to hunt over it.

2. Bucks build habits before the rut, not during it.

This is the piece hunters miss most often.

A buck's rut routine isn't invented on November 5th. It's the layered result of everything he's been doing since August — every path he's cruised, every scrape he's checked, and all the data he's gathered on the other bucks, does, cover, food, and more leading up to the rut. When testosterone kicks in and the daylight gets short, he's not designing new patterns. He's running the ones he already built.

Once he's checking your scent hub and leaving his own mark on it, it becomes something he continues to do throughout the year. The sooner you have it out, the sooner he takes it over. And once it's his, it stays his — through pre-rut, through the rut, through post-rut, right into the next season.

Late setups miss that window. The buck's routine is already set. Yours is asking him to add a new stop.

3. You get an inventory before it counts.

Set up early and your trail cam is already logging who's around before you sit the stand.

That's not just about seeing pictures. It's about knowing which buck is on your property, how often he's there, what wind he's moving on, and what time of day he's showing up on the scent hub. By the time you're actually in the tree, you're not hunting a mystery — you're hunting a specific deer whose habits you already know.

That's the whole point of Inventory. Pattern. Hunt. Inventory has to come first. And inventory only works if the cameras have something to log.

4. A big shift is happening right now.

Every day now, testosterone is rising in the mature bucks in your area.

They're shedding velvet. They're re-forming from the loose bachelor groups they ran all summer. They're establishing pecking orders, figuring out who's dominant, working out who's going to be where when November hits.

Scent hubs are one of the main tools they use to do it. That's where they check in with the other bucks in the area — who's been here, who's walking my ground, who do I need to bump into and settle things with. When you put a HODAG setup out right now, you're not just adding a scrape. You're giving them the spot they were already looking for to work out the pecking order.

Miss this window, and by the time your setup is out, that pecking order is already sorted. The dominant buck already knows where the other bucks are. The scent hub you drop in the ground on October 20th arrives at a party that's already over.

What "Too Late" Actually Means

Let's be clear about the calendar. Too late doesn't mean now.

Too late means never. If you're reading this in September or early October, you're inside the window — you're just closer to the back edge of it than the front.

The math is simple: a setup put in the ground today has weeks to months to acclimate before the rut. A setup created three weeks from today has days to weeks. Neither is nothing. But one gives you a scent hub the deer have taken over. The other gives you a scent hub the deer are still investigating.

Both work. One works better.

That's why we say it's not too late — but the sooner the better.

Set It Up This Weekend

The gap between "I'll do it soon" and "I did it" is where seasons get made or lost.

If you've got a Licking Stick sitting in the box, get it in the ground. If you've got a food plot without a setup in it, get one built. If you've got a scrape line running through the timber without a Licking Branch or a HempScent Rope at the anchor points, hang them.

Don't wait for the rut to build your setup. Let your setup become part of the deer's routine. By the time the rut arrives, your ground is already dialed in — and you're hunting the deer that have been showing up on it for weeks.
